Snow Lake is a vast high-altitude basin of snow and ice in the Karakoram mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan. Far from towns and roads, it forms part of the remarkable trekking route linking Biafo Glacier with Hispar Glacier. This remote landscape is a destination for experienced trekkers seeking solitude, dramatic mountain scenery and a true wilderness adventure. The Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department describes the Biafo–Hispar journey as a route to Snow Lake. District Tours
The expedition typically begins in Skardu and continues through Shigar Valley to Askole, the last settlement before the glacial wilderness. From there, trekkers travel across the Biafo Glacier and Snow Lake before crossing Hispar La and descending along the Hispar Glacier towards Nagar. The route passes through immense fields of ice, rugged mountain terrain and remote campsites, offering a rare view of the Karakoram far beyond the usual tourist roads.
Snow Lake is unlike a conventional lake destination. Its defining feature is the immense white landscape of snow and glacier, framed by high peaks and deep valleys. The stillness and scale of the terrain create a powerful experience for photographers and adventure travellers. Every day on the route brings new views, from crevassed ice and rocky moraine to expansive snowfields beneath the mountain skyline.
