Baltoro Glacier is one of the most famous trekking destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan. Located in the Karakoram mountains, it offers an extraordinary journey through a remote world of ice, towering peaks and vast rocky valleys. The glacier forms part of the classic route from Askole to Concordia and K2 Base Camp, making it a dream destination for experienced trekkers and mountaineering enthusiasts. K-2
The trek usually begins after travelling from Skardu through Shigar Valley to Askole, the last village before the wilderness of the upper Braldu Valley. From there, the route continues on foot across rugged trails and glacial terrain. As you progress, the scenery opens onto an impressive panorama of some of the Karakoram’s most celebrated peaks, including Broad Peak and the Gasherbrum mountains.
A major highlight is Concordia, a dramatic meeting point of glaciers surrounded by towering mountains. From here, trekkers can continue towards Broad Peak Base Camp and K2 Base Camp, where the immense scale of the mountains becomes unforgettable. The Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department describes the traditional K2 approach as a route from Skardu through Shigar, Dassu and Askole, then onward across Baltoro Glacier to Concordia. K-2
Baltoro is a challenging wilderness trek, not a casual sightseeing stop. Travellers should expect long walking days, high altitude, cold nights and changing weather. The route crosses uneven glacial surfaces and remote terrain, so suitable equipment, good fitness, acclimatisation and experienced guides are essential. Plan the journey with a qualified local trekking operator and follow their advice on permits, safety and current conditions.
