Skardu is a scenic town in Gilgit-Baltistan and a popular starting point for exploring the mountains, lakes and valleys of Baltistan. Set among dramatic peaks and broad river valleys, it welcomes travellers with beautiful landscapes, a rich Balti heritage and access to some of northern Pakistan’s best-known destinations. There is plenty to discover in and around Skardu. Visit Kharpocho Fort for a glimpse of local history and elevated views over the town. Manthal Buddha Rock offers a fascinating look at ancient Buddhist carvings, while Skardu’s bazaars provide a chance to browse local goods and experience everyday life. Skardu is equally known for its lakes and unusual landscapes. Sadpara Lake, surrounded by mountains, lies close to town and is a peaceful place to enjoy the water and scenery. Further along the road, Lower Kachura Lake—often called Shangrila Lake—and Upper Kachura Lake offer striking views and opportunities to relax by the water. The Katpana Cold Desert adds a surprising contrast, with open sand dunes set against a high-mountain backdrop.
