Explore Deosai National Park on an unforgettable journey across one of Gilgit-Baltistan’s most remarkable high-altitude landscapes. Stretching between Skardu and Astore, Deosai is a vast alpine plateau of open grasslands, streams, wetlands and mountain views. During the warmer months, wildflowers add colour to the plains, while the wide horizon and crisp air create a sense of space unlike anywhere else in the region.
The journey into Deosai is part of the experience. From Skardu, the route passes Sadpara Lake before climbing onto the plateau; from Astore, visitors can enter through Chilam. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, and road access depends on the season and conditions. Travel with an experienced local driver, check the route before departure and allow enough time for stops along the way. e-tourism.visitgilgitbaltistan.gov.pk
One of the park’s best-known landmarks is Sheosar Lake, set amid open highland scenery. Visitors can pause by the water, take photographs and enjoy the surrounding meadows. Deosai is also an important habitat for wildlife, including the endangered Himalayan brown bear, which the park was established to help protect. Other animals live across the plateau as well, but sightings are never guaranteed. Observe wildlife from a safe distance and follow park guidance throughout your visit. e-tourism.visitgilgitbaltistan.gov.pk
A Deosai tour is ideal for travellers who enjoy wide-open nature, scenic drives and quiet moments outdoors. Depending on your itinerary and current conditions, you may stop at places such as Kala Pani or Bara Pani, enjoy a picnic, or spend time photographing the changing light across the plains. Camping may be possible at designated locations, but visitors should confirm arrangements and facilities in advance.
